1st Youth Forum of the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves
From May 28 to 31, Graciosa Island in the Azores hosted a meeting that brought together young representatives from the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves.
With its rich natural and cultural heritage, Graciosa provided a unique and symbolic setting for the consolidation of the National Youth Network of the MaB Programme in Portugal – a collaborative space designed to strengthen the role of youth in the management and governance of Biosphere Reserves.
The sessions focused on identifying the main risks and opportunities for more active and effective youth participation. Participatory dynamics, round tables, and training sessions were held, focusing on strategic planning, leadership, and communication, promoting intergenerational dialogue and the exchange of experiences. Participants also took part in technical visits to explore Graciosa’s biodiversity and unique features first-hand, reinforcing the link between theory and practice.
The forum’s activities took place in parallel with the Islands for Sustainability meeting (an initiative of COST Action Shift), in which the young participants were also involved.
As an outcome, an action plan was developed to lay the groundwork for stronger cooperation and to drive pilot projects among the different Portuguese reserves.
This forum marked a decisive step toward youth leadership in the management of these territories, fostering synergies and strengthening the commitment to sustainable development.
