International Day for Biodiversity 2025

Reservas da Biosfera 22 de May, 2025

May 22 marks the International Day for Biodiversity: a call to reflect on how we can live in harmony with nature.

Today we celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity, established in 1992 by the United Nations to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the aim of raising global awareness of biodiversity and its importance for all aspects of human life.

Biodiversity is essential for human well-being, the health of the planet, and the economy, providing vital resources such as food, water, and energy, offering protection against disasters, and enriching our leisure and cultural experiences.

In 2025, under the theme “Living in Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development” the focus is on the interlinkages between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), with a view to accelerating the implementation of actions that safeguard biodiversity and foster a future in harmony with nature.

On this day, we highlight UNESCO Biosphere Reserves as concrete examples of efforts undertaken in this direction.
