The Biosphere Reserves Project at “Ação Bandeira 2024”
The Corpo Nacional de Escutas (CNE = Portuguese Catholic Scouts), through its National Environment Department and in partnership with the Oceano Azul Foundation, annually promotes the “Month of the Sea“. This initiative, which runs throughout November and involves thousands of scouts across the country, aims to create a wave of beach and riverside cleanups while raising awareness among young people and communities about the issue of marine litter.
As part of the “Month of the Sea,” the Ação Bandeira [Action Flag] event has been held since 2019. This one-day event has a strong educational component, inviting scouts and volunteers to participate in cleaning a maritime or river area. At the same time, they have the opportunity to learn through various workshops and activities about blue literacy, sustainability, biodiversity, and the environment, always with a special focus on marine ecosystems.
In 2024, Ação Bandeira will take place on November 16 in Lisbon, at Parque das Nações. The activity will begin with a cleanup action in the riverside area, followed by workshops and activities on topics such as sustainability, oceans, and waste, organized by various institutional partners of the Corpo Nacional de Escutas. Among them will be the Biosphere Reserves project, offering activities designed to highlight the contributions of Portugal’s Biosphere Reserves.
