This extensive history has provided us with a multitude of invaluable processes upon which humanity heavily relies for our survival. However, despite our profound dependence on biodiversity, we persist in the destruction of vast forested areas and the acceleration of climate change, which poses an increasingly challenging threat to life on our planet.

Recognizing the intricate interplay between biodiversity and the well-being of human populations, the United Nations Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework has set a goal to expand terrestrial protected areas and other conservation regions by 30% by the year 2030.
The success of this goal, with its aim to halt widespread biodiversity declines and prevent extinctions, hinges on the assumption that these areas will serve as effective buffers against biodiversity loss across the entire spectrum of life, while simultaneously ensuring global ecological resilience.
In this context, the global network of biosphere reserves established by UNESCO assumes an even greater significance. These reserves serve as exemplars of the essential role that biodiversity conservation plays in local progress and the well-being of communities.
Celebrating this network and this occasion is a reaffirmation of the commitment shared by a diverse range of territories that have chosen to prioritize respect for nature and the well-being of all life. The hope is that this celebration will inspire others to join in a global effort to regenerate our planet.
The 12 Portuguese Biospheres leave us with a collective commitment and an important testimonial of the power of this network. Watch the videos:
