World Environment Day 2025

Reservas da Biosfera 5 de June, 2025

June 5 marks World Environment Day, this year under the theme Beat Plastic Pollution — a call for global mobilization against plastic pollution

Fighting plastic pollution is a key step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate action, sustainable production and consumption, ocean protection, and ecosystem restoration. This year’s campaign seeks to inspire the adoption of more sustainable practices and promote systemic changes in the fight against pollution.

In response to this global challenge, we highlight the Zero Pollution Manifesto, an ongoing commitment and strategic plan to tackle pollution in the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves. Aligned with the European Zero Pollution Action Plan, the Manifesto sets out concrete actions to reduce local pollution sources, with the goal of protecting natural ecosystems and improving the quality of life of local communities. Among its key targets, the Manifesto aims for these territories to help achieve a 50% reduction in plastic litter at sea and a 30% reduction in microplastics released into the environment.
