CPLP Biosphere Reserves Network Recognized as a Thematic Network of the MaB Program
On July 4, 2024, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves Network of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) was unanimously approved as a thematic network of the Man and the Biosphere Program during the 36th Session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Program (July 1-5, 2024, Morocco).
The proposal was formally presented by Portugal (Helena Freitas) and supported by Mozambique (Mateus Mutemba). This project, ongoing since 2022, has received funding from the CPLP Special Fund, aiming at the establishment and consolidation of the CPLP MaB Network.
As reported by CPLPMaB, the network currently comprises 24 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves located in Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Altogether, these reserves cover approximately 196 million hectares and have an impact on around 104.5 million people living in these regions.
