Africa in Focus on International Day of Biosphere Reserves 2024

Reservas da Biosfera 3 de November, 2024

In this year's celebrations of the International Day of Biosphere Reserves, the UNESCO Deputy Director launched the initiative to emphasize the theme of Africa and International Relations.

The Portuguese Biosphere Reserves project joins this initiative, highlighting its special connection with African Biosphere Reserves within the framework of the CPLP Network, which was approved in July as a thematic network of the Man and the Biosphere Program.

The CPLP Network currently comprises 24 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves across Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe, covering approximately 196 million hectares and impacting 104,500,000 people living in these territories.

As suggested by the National Commission, we highlight the project “Being Principense: Art, Culture, and Heritage in the Past, Present, and Future,” developed in 2022, which focused on collecting memories and perceptions of those living in the Príncipe Island Biosphere Reserve. The project aimed to identify and characterize Príncipe’s cultural and natural heritage, observing, from a historical perspective, the past and present, promoting the appreciation of local knowledge and its preservation for the future. The results can be accessed on the Memory for All portal.
