Serra da Estrela's application to become a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
The initiative, coordinated by Emanuel de Castro (Estrela Geopark Association) and Helena Freitas (CFE/TERRA), is part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park Co-management Plan and aims to enhance its natural and cultural heritage, promote sustainable development, and strengthen ecological resilience. The application, led by scientific and local entities, was submitted in April 2025 and subject to public consultation in the six municipalities of the Natural Park: Covilhã, Celorico da Beira, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, and Seia.
The process could lead to Serra da Estrela joining the international network of Biosphere Reserves as early as 2026, joining the existing Portuguese Reserves and becoming the largest continental Biosphere Reserve in Portugal. The Government, through the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, emphasizes the importance of this strategic proposal for the ecological and cultural enhancement of Serra da Estrela, especially in view of the impacts of rural fires, which have contributed to the loss of biodiversity and natural resources.
